An overzealous young nurse from the West of Ireland leaves the loving embrace of her Mayo home to fulfil her destiny by healing the sick, the sad and the destitute of 1970s Dublin.

She is the BEST nurse in Ireland and is determined to prove herself to the city’s renowned Rotmund Hospital faculty, but will she make the cut? Inspired by her hero Florence Nightingale, Nursey will do whatever her vocation demands.

This hilarious and heartfelt comedy written and performed by Aoife Martyn puts the duality of the nursing profession under the microscope in all its catastrophic and uplifting glory.

About the company

Aoife graduated from the Gaiety School of Acting in 2017. Together with three classmates, she founded No Desserts soon after; a vibrant theatre company dedicated to producing new, compelling and humorous plays for mixed audiences.

No Desserts have staged successful productions such as This is Not a Cult, the much lauded, musical comedy written by Eoghan Collins (Smock Alley Theatre, Dec 2019) and the critically acclaimed, six run sell-out 48 by Gemma Kane; a true story based on the Stardust tragedy of 1981 (Smock Alley Theatre Apr/Sep 2019, The Viking Theatre 2020, The Whale Theatre 2020, Axis 2020, Bewley’s Café Theatre 2022).

Aoife wrote and performed Nursey (Then entitled Nurse, me) as a work-in-progress for the Scene and Heard Festival in 2020.

She was then chosen as part of the first edition of writers for The Abbey Theatre’s Dear, Ireland virtual theatre showcase. For this she wrote the piece ‘Night 4’ performed by Norma Sheahan.

#FRINGE LAB 50 supported Aoife in developing Nursey with mentor Clare O’Reilly of Malaprop Theatre. Most recently The Abbey Theatre selected Nursey as part of their new writing development programme ‘Engine Room’, where she received funding to complete a three day rehearsal with her director Clare Maguire and other theatrical practitioners
