No Illusions
Brian Fitzgerald is an author and illustrator of children’s picture books. This exhibition however is far from picture book art. It’s a collection of oil paintings on canvas and on board. Unlike his illustration work Brian’s paintings are abstract and free from narrative. A layer of oil paint is applied one on top of another. It’s a slow process compared to the deadlines of picture book illustration. Each layer needing weeks to dry. The final piece will need a year to dry before it’s ready for the gallery. He embraces the departure from representative art. Without the goal of creating an illusion of a still life or landscape, Brian appreciates the freedom to explore paint, colour and texture. Enjoying the unplanned surprising results of painting artwork that is not connected to the visible world.
Gallery Opening Hours: 11am-4pm Tuesday to Saturday. Closed for lunch 1.30-2.30pm.
