Secondary Schools Shakespeare Festival

Creating a unique opportunity for students to experience Shakespeare as his work should be experienced, on stage!

Children performing on stage at dlr Mill Theatre

Shakespeare Festival Details

Our aim is to create a unique opportunity for students to experience Shakespeare as his work should be experienced, on stage. The festival framework gives teachers the opportunity to develop their chosen Shakespeare in class through performance. With given texts and fixed timetables, the onus is placed firmly on the students shoulders to interact meaningfully with the project at hand. Entries are then invited to bring their own 30 MINUTE production to perform at dlr MILL THEATRE

Now in its third year, the Festival has attracted schools from all over Ireland. The Overall Award in 2020 went to Mount Sackville and adjudicator Geoff O’Keeffe was thrilled with the level of theatricality brought to the stage.

The Plan

In the initial period a Facilitator from the Venue will offer a Shakespeare workshop to your school to introduce your students to the concept and get the ball rolling. They will also provide you with a 30 minute script for your use. The competition is open to all years.

Rules

  • All performers must be students from the competing school
  • Performance Time is limited to 30 mins (STRICTLY)
  • Each School may have more than one entry
  • Each entry must be accompanied by €75 entry fee
  • Entries are accepted on a first come first served basis

During the Festival

The venue’s staff will welcome your group to the venue the day of the festival. Your group will be given a set ‘Get-In’ time to complete a Technical/Dress rehearsal. A number of schools will perform each evening of the festival to a live audience in our Main Auditorium.

On the final evening of the festival,  all awards will be presented.
